ABOUT

Our extensive Challenge Course offers a variety of programs and activities in which participants develop problem-solving and team-building skills. Participants might balance on cables, climb trees or zip through our redwood forest. Our highly-trained facilitators provide expert instruction and help participants connect their experience to daily life, learn to trust others, and discover new strengths within themselves.

We offer a variety of programs tailored to the needs of different groups. Our staff can work on specific outcomes, such as leadership development, self-empowerment, or coping skills. Our programs help participants learn how to take healthy risks, learn new skills and dare to enter into challenging situations.  At the end of each experience groups have an opportunity to reflect, interpret, and apply what they’ve learned to their everyday life.

We are proudly partnered with Synergo, an accredited full-service organization and a Professional Vendor Member of the Association for Challenge Course Technology (ACCT), the nationally recognized standards-setting organization for the challenge course industry. We work closely with Synergo to ensure that the Westminster Woods Challenge Course is upholding training, building, and course inspection standards.

Activities

TEAM BUILDING Challenges

The goal of running Team Challenges (Team Building) is to provide an environment for groups to work on skill sets such as teamwork and cooperation, clear communication, trust and perseverance. The activities are presented in a fun and exciting way, and are intentionally designed to push groups out of their comfort zone and help participants explore and better understand how they work together.

These activities include physical/mental problem solving tasks designed to promote communication, interaction, cooperation, and trust within a group. We choose include Team Challenges in our Challenge Course program offerings to help groups become acquainted with one-another and build group cohesion. They often require the individual and group to face challenging situations where they must draw on the inner strengths of themselves and others to accomplish the task.

HIGH ROPES COURSE ACTIVITIES

We have 12 High Ropes Activities that can be found throughout our redwood forest. This extensive course features many different types High Ropes Challenges that can be used to complete different goals on the challenge course. Participants might zip through the tree, traverse through an aerial obstacle course, or work as a group to belay a teammate as they climb up a redwood tree. Scroll down to check out our different activities!

coho crossing

The Coho Crossing is an activity that pairs participants together to overcome multiple aerial obstacles as they make their way across the beautiful Dutch Bill Creek. With their partner, participants work together to make it across to the first platform. From there, they will go through a series of commands to communicate with one another as they transfer to the second leg of the course. Participants will then make their way back through a second set of obstacles until they have returned to solid ground.

Static course

The Static Course is a wonderful activity for groups who desire work in responsibility, trust, cooperation, and communication. Paired participants will work together to traverse a series of conjoined elements while taking direct responsibility for their own safety through a self-belay system. Facilitators will lead the group through a course of seven high ropes elements, ranging from 10-35 feet off the ground. As many as 12 people can be off the ground at one time, making this a true team activity.

The Giant Swing

The Giant Swing is a favorite activity among the challenge course staff. Three distinct challenges make up the Swing: the Inclined Log, a ‘postman’s walk’, and the swing itself. Participants will climb a ladder and walk across an inclined log. The inclined log is a 30 foot timber lashed at an incline between two trees. Participants must then use their determination and balance to walk the length of the log to the top platform, at 40 feet. After reaching the top, participants cross the ‘Postman’s Walk’ by stepping down onto a foot-cable and traversing by using a hand-line for balance. Once participants have crossed, they will meet a facilitator stationed at the swing platform who will assist them in securely clipping into our Giant Swing. Once the facilitators give the command, participants leave the platform, and find themselves swinging on a four story giant swing, soaring through our canyon!

The swing component of this activity can be run on its own as a Haul Swing. This is a team activity where the participant is lifted into the air by their teammates. When run as the Haul Swing, there is a minimum requirement of 11 people as well as a prerequisite of team building activities to get the “haul team” ready for the responsibility of supporting their teammates.

LIONS LEAP

Our tallest high ropes activity, the Lions Leap can be challenging in more ways than one. Participants climb nearly 50 feet up a mature Douglas Fir Tree, with the option of climbing the handles in the tree, or climbing the hanging cargo net. Once they reach the platform above, the participant can walk, run, or inch their way to the end of ‘the plank,’ where they leap for an adjustable hanging trapeze. Whether they catch it or miss, they are slowly lowered to the ground.

flying fox

The smaller cousin of the Lions Leap, but just as much fun! Participants will climb a ladder and metal foot-holds up to the top of a platform resting on a redwood tree. From here, they have the opportunity to either sit and scoot or run and “fly” off the edge into the air.

Multi-Vine

The Multi-vine is a test in balance and cooperation. In pairs, participants climb up to a foot cable that runs between two trees. The goal is to traverse as far along the cable as possible. Suspended like vines (hence the name) along the length of the cable are several lengths of rope. Using each other as well as these ropes, participants traverse through the trees until they have accomplished the goals set out before them. If you’re looking for a high ropes activity that gets the entire groups involved, this is an excellent activity as it can also be run with a team belay.

GIANTS LADDER

Another paired activity, the Giant’s Ladder requires a combination of strategy, balance, and strength. Participants first climb up a suspended cargo net to reach the first large rung of a ladder. The second rung rests five feet above the first and requires teamwork (or amazing agility) to reach it. Partners must help each other if they hope to succeed in reaching the top of this ladder. Once at the top, participants can enjoy the spectacular treetop view before being lowered gently to the ground by their teammates. The Giant’s Ladder can also be run as a group team belay.

FLYING SQUIRREL

Another high ropes team activity, the Flying Squirrel gets the whole group involved as participants are lifted into the air by their teammates. The “Haul Team” works together to hoist the “squirrel” off of the ground using only a rope and the power of teamwork. This activity requires a minimum of 11 people as well as a prerequisite of team building activities to get the “haul team” ready for the responsibility of supporting their teammates.

HIGH V

The High V is a challenge designed for partners. Thirty feet in the air, two cables run from one tree to two separate trees. The goal is for a pair of participants to stand on the opposing cables facing one another and traverse out as far as they can using one another for support. By supporting one another, it is possible to make it extremely far! A great activity to emphasize the importance of support, trust, teamwork, and giving a helping hand.

Zipline

Another favorite on course, our 300 foot zipline begins with a walk up our ‘zipline trail’. Once at the top of the trail, participants traverse a postman’s walk to reach the Zip Takeoff Platform where they are greeted by a facilitator who will assist them in attaching themselves to the Zipline. Participants are faced with a daunting task: letting themselves fall from a 40 foot platform, then zipping through our canyon far below…Once participants have reached the bottom, they are assisted by a facilitator in exiting the Zipline.

CREEK ZIP

The Creek Zip is the perfect introduction to the high ropes course. Younger participants and those with little experience with heights can enjoy a relaxing zipline across Dutch Bill Creek. There is opportunity to up the challenge on this activity by wearing a blindfold , going off backwards, or attempting to throw a bean bag through a hoop in mid air!

King Swing

Also known as the creek swing, this activity is one of the only elements that isn’t located in the Challenge Course Canyon. Take a meandering stroll down our train tunnel road and arrive at a platform where participants can climb a 10’ swinging ladder up to the top. Once participants are up on the platform their facilitator will be waiting to guide them to swing out over the Dutch Bill Creek at nearly 60’ feet in the air!

BENJI “T-REX” (HE/HIM)

Challenge Course Technician

Ben is from the small town of Lilbourn, Missouri. At first chance, Ben sought out ways to grow and learn in new environments and set his sights on Northern California. As an Americorps volunteer, he discovered the world of outdoor education and fell in love with it. From Americorps he worked as an instructor for the Baltimore Chesapeake Bay Outward Bound School, guiding teens on backpacking, kayaking, and canoeing trips. Eventually his love of outdoor education brought him back to Northern California to work for Walker Creek Ranch in Marin County, and, finally, to Westminster Woods. His hobbies include kayaking, camping, and playing his guitar.

JAQUE “INKY” (SHE/THEY)

Challenge Course Technician

Jaque is a Sonoma county local, growing up in Santa Rosa just 30 minutes down the street from Westminster Woods. Jaque spent some time away from home studying Kinesiology at San Diego State University but shortly after graduating made the move back to Northern California to be closer to her family. After spending some time as an HR manager she soon realized she did not want to be stuck in an office forever so decided to zip line the redwoods at Alliance Redwoods located next door. After a year and a half of zipping and outdoor education, Jaque decided to continue her passion for naturalist work at Westminister Woods but you will still find her flying through the trees on the weekend! Hobbies include basketball, anime, climbing and photography.
