Teacher Naturalist
Job Description: A Naturalist teaches in an outdoor setting covering curriculum in topics of natural sciences and related subjects such as biology, ecology, natural history, marine biology, astronomy, and geology. Located in the coastal hills of western Sonoma County, California.

Dates: February to June and September to November

Qualifications: A bachelors degree in a related science field, environmental education, education or recreation is required. Experience working with youth, outdoor programs, and environmental organizations, and wilderness skills, or a teaching credential is beneficial. Also required: Knowledge and skills in oral communication and group teaching techniques; Enjoyment of the out-of-doors, creativity, enthusiasm, flexibility, self-motivation, and a sense of humor; Current CPR and 1st Aid Certification (or training may be arranged).

Responsibilities: Naturalists will work with the Program Coordinator and Interns to create and develop environmental activities and teaching materials to meet the goals of the curriculum. They will assist in mentoring and evaluating interns. They are responsible for the safety, discipline, and participation of students with the help of the counselors. They are responsible for actual planning and implementation of the material taught during the walks or activities. They are to be a team member during staff duties, like dinning room host, preparation and clean up, recreation and games facilitation, staff meetings, and evaluations and conclusions. Time will be provided when available for naturalists to research and develop teaching materials and tools.

Our Programs: follow an Earth systems approach to connect student's community experiences with the many ecosystems available, such as coastal redwood and mixed forests, tide pools and seashores, riparian zones, and meadow and chaparral areas. Ropes course facilitators and initiative activities are also incorporated into programs to increase participants' experience of individual and group communication, team work, and group creativity and accomplishments. Programs generally are directed for students in 5th to 8th grades. Programs lengths vary from 3 to 5 days and evenings, involving groups sizes of 25 to 150 people. The ratio of Naturalists to students is about 10 to 15 students to one Naturalist. Our programs are based on three themes: valuing the environment; systems and interactions; stewardship and conservation.

Compensation: : An weekly wage of $320.00 to $370.00 is provided. Meals and lodging are provided during program hours between Monday and Friday.

Environmental Education Internship
Job Description: An intern usually accompanies a Teacher Naturalist during all activities with students to observe and learn the types of activities conducted, learn about facilitation skills like setting tone and pace, and learn facts and skills to successful environmental teaching. Interns will shadow and assist different Naturalists, each of whom has their own style. Located in the coastal hills of western Sonoma County, California.

Dates: February to June and September to November. Dates may be flexible depending upon school schedule.

Qualifications: Interns must come from a background in a related field or area of study. The intern may arranged with his/her college for the position to transfer into college credits. Current CPR and 1st Aid Certification required (or training may be arranged).

The intern should begin to progressively conduct more activities during a program, so they can work to take on the full responsibilities of a Naturalist position.
